The Renault Zoé is more versatile with its second generation. That’s what its WLTP autonomy and optional quick charger promise. But unfortunately this is not enough to make a long journey.

Launched since 2019, the second generation Renault Zoé has corrected many defects of the first version. And this is especially true in terms of versatility, as its dated platform allowed it to get a 52 kWh battery. According to the WLTP standard, the mixed range can go up to 395 km, or at most 386 km with the R135 engine. During our long journey on the motorway between Lyon and Paris, we observed a consumption of exactly 23 kWh / 100 km, or 226 km of range before running out of fuel. Or 158 km from 80 to 10% load. But the runtime / charging time ratio is clearly not to its advantage.

Renault Zoé charging curve: a full profit in 53 minutes

You have to put € 1,000 on the table to benefit from fast charging on the Renault Zoé. At this price, it will then offer a Combo-CCS socket in its muzzle which will allow it to aim for a maximum output of 50kW DC. A power that we will never have encountered during our various measurements, the maximum recorded is 45 kW.

Despite slightly less than promised real-world charging power, the charging curve holds correctly down to around 45-50%, before starting to slowly tumble. With an 80% load, we recorded a residual power of 24 kW, which is 46% less than the observed peak of 45 kW. The difference is ultimately in the relative mean, but the value is very low in absolute terms.

So don’t expect miracles in terms of charging speeds, and you will have to wait a long time at the charging stations. And you will have to stay there more exactly 53 minutes to reach 10-80%. It will take another twenty-five minutes to reach the 100% score (of which 12 minutes on 80-90%). In the end, the full tank takes 1 hour and 18 minutes, 15 minutes longer than an e-208 that suffers from too slow refilling.

Autonomy recovered: 99 km in 30 minutes

There are no surprises when you compare the range gained with the charging time: the Renault Zoé is at the bottom of our ranking! It takes 30 minutes to gain 99km of range, when an e-208 only needs 15 minutes to gain the same range. It is only after an hour of charging, after gaining 171 km, that in most cases it will be possible to disconnect the car, although it is not impossible to shoot further. Because as we saw during the first episode of this Supertest, Zoé can quickly be greedy on the freeway depending on the terrain.

Charging costs for Renault Zoé R135

The terminals we connected to indicated an average amount of 54.24 kWh to fill up the Renault Zoé with fuel. The cost of top-ups will, as always, depend on the operator’s tariff. In Electra, which promises to freeze prices, the top-up is the most interesting with a total close to 24 euros (17 euros on 10-80%). At Ionity things get more difficult as the price rises to almost € 37 (€ 26 on 10-80%). We can therefore safely count on a direct cost of use of 11.50 / 100 km on the motorway with the most expensive of the operators.

During our trip, we made three charging stops for a total amount of € 59.27 excluding badge charge fees. Running a domestic fare on arrival to regain the departure fare would increase the total cost to € 64.70, with a final cost of € 12.94 / 100km on this 500km journey.

Like the Peugeot e-208, the Renault Zoé does not have an onboard route planner. It simply allows you to announce that the destination is out of range of the remaining range, symbolized by a halo on the map. You will then have to manually search for nearby terminals. From then on we trusted our estimates and solid habits on this journey. Note that for this route, the Chargemap and ABRP applications are very cautious with 5 stops planned for the first and 4 for the second. It should also be noted that charging times are also pessimistic with 2 h 12 according to Chargemap and 2 h 30 according to ABRP.

The Renault Zoé finally needed three charging stops. Nothing new with a range of almost 230 km, which barely allows him to make jumps from one station to another. And with it, visitors will have time to visit every corner of the rest areas thanks to the charging times. Even with a precise strategy, the stops are long. And we were connected for exactly 2 h 11, bringing our total travel time to 6 h 43. It is the longest of all, with 1 h 11 more than the Peugeot e-208!

No value judgment here, but simply a demonstration of what its autonomy / charging power ratio actually gives. Not for nothing this is undoubtedly this city car that is regularly used in reports to load the limits of the electric car on long journeys. However, the Renault Zoé is a good city car that promises a certain versatility. Especially on a daily basis, with a smooth ride and zen atmosphere, even if the range on the motorway is limiting. But it is its fast recharging power that nullifies any ambition to travel behind the wheel. This is one of the missions of the upcoming Renault 5, which will soon replace the Zoé.
