highlights of fashion week

Paris fashion week ended on Tuesday, and with it atypical, even surreal moments. A look at the five highlights of the week.

1. Bella Hadid’s spray dress

Impossible to miss, this video has been everywhere on social networks since last week. During the Coperni fashion show, last Friday, the dress worn by the model Bella Hadid was made in a few minutes under the eyes of the public, and not in any way: it is a liquid sprayed on Bella Hadid’s skin that solidified until to become a fabric.

The model entered the stage of the Museum of Arts and Crafts only in her underwear and a pair of shoes. The liquid sprayed on her skin was a component created by the Fabrican company and made with cotton fibers and synthetic materials. It is a creation by Arnaud Vaillant and Sébastien Meyer, at the helm of Coperni.

2. Kanye West’s mud parade

The Balenciaga fashion show took place in the mud on Sunday. Kanye West led the way by appearing dressed all in black and splashing puddles with every step. The designer Balenciaga Demna justified this atypical stage choice with a pacifist message: “The mud is a metaphor for searching deeply for the truth and having your feet on the ground. (…) Make love don’t make war. It was a way for Demna to support Ukraine, a country he lived in as a child.

3. The return of a Ukrainian designer

Ukrainian designer Lilia Litkovskaya returned to Fashion Week after not being able to show in the spring. During Paris Fashion Week last March, she was the only Ukrainian designer on the spot but she was unable to present her collection, just days after fleeing her invaded country on February 24th.

This time, last Thursday, he was able to present his spring-summer 2023 collection. The models took place in a carousel in the Tuileries gardens, accompanied by Ukrainian songs. Lilia Litkovskaya told France Info that she found inspiration for this collection by traveling to the Ukrainian mountain villages.

4. Pixelated clothes

The photos give the impression of a montage, yet they are very real. Models dressed in pixelated dresses walked the catwalk at the Spanish brand Loewe show last Friday. A trompe-l’oeil t-shirt and hoodie looked like something out of a video game, with their thick black contours giving the impression of a 2D world and their folds drawn in gray on white. The pants also give the impression of a non-loading image, with a pixelated tinge on the beige fabric.

5. A “body positive” fashion show.

Ester Manas presented her creations on Saturday that say no to the “summer body” and yes to the “body at sunset”. Understanding: a spring-summer 2023 collection worn by plus size models that matches all silhouettes. The designer thus presented “second skin” dresses, stretched to adapt to different sizes.

Ester Manas told France Info about the movement she sees on social networks: “There is a power grab for curvy women”. “Since the customers, the girls on the street, want it, fashion has to bend”, she comments from those who work for the “total democratization” of luxury fashion.
