A superhero game is often a challenge for developers. Having a base of loyal connoisseurs, these games are always scrutinized for the slightest mistake. However, WB Games Montreal is well aware of the game, if you excuse my english. After designing The origins of Batman Arkham in 2013, the Montreal studio wasn’t afraid to take on a daunting challenge like Gotham Knights. If you still doubt the game, you will be frankly surprised by what awaits you!

Gotham post Batman

Batman is dead and our four vigilantes find themselves without a mentor. The story of Gotham Knights takes us to a city where the hero who protected her no longer exists. Gotham is then torn apart from all sides for its control: the police want to take back their role, but gangs of criminals also want to take it over.

And in between, we find our four prodigies – Nightwing, Batgirl, Little Red Riding Hood and Robin – in mourning and with the heavy responsibility on their young shoulders to protect the city. “For us, we felt it was the perfect recipe for a new Gotham experience,” explained Patrick Redding, creative director of WB Games Montreal, during my visit to the studios. “It emphasizes personal growth and emerging threats […] Therefore, the player is left to himself to complete the work.

Obviously, in order to create a story that fits well interactively, some changes had to be made. Although the team is committed to honoring the work of Court of Owls (Court of Owls) by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, had to push the concept beyond a simple adaptation. “Obviously it’s an adaptation, in the sense that they are different characters who will have a different experience, but we have remained extremely faithful to Court of Owls and Gotham’s vibe, ”explains Ann Lemay, Narrative Director of Gotham Knights, in an interview. “We really want fans of the Court of Owls recognize this concept in the game. […] There will also be some nice surprises throughout history, “he adds with a smile.

Chaos signed Harley Quinn

During my rehearsal, I was immersed in Harley Quinn’s story arc. Since the Joker is gone, Batman asked Harley for help in building criminal profiles, as she is a psychiatrist and expert in the field. Bruce Wayne’s death is still recent and the criminals of the city don’t know that the Batman is gone. However, it seems a rumor has reached Harley’s ears and of course it’s panicking our four heroes.

As a result, the young criminal shows us all the colors and makes us jump through hoops to get our hands on the warrant that Bruce left her before his death.

Here we are faced with a new Harley. She is gone support worker of an illustrious villain; it is therefore evident that he wants to prove himself. “It was very important for us not to remake a Harley story that has already been done,” says Ann. So they took full advantage of that hunger to be the main attraction and it doesn’t do things by halves. For this part of the story, chaos is king and it was the perfect setting to see the heroes in action.

Dynamic battles

Brawl is obviously a central part of the game: despite a solid story and stunning graphics, if a character’s control is poor, the game won’t survive. WB Games Montreal is therefore dedicated to providing a fun, smooth and varied experience for players, no matter what fighting style they prefer.

It’s interesting how each character offers something everyone will like, no matter what style they prefer. It was important to the development team that the heroes’ personalities were reflected in their fighting style.

Furthermore, if a player decides to change characters after several missions, it will not be difficult to tame its functioning. “There is no penalty [en changeant]as they all level up at the same time. […] It allows people to pick a character in the beginning and play them all the time, but also to go back to basics and change! It gives the player a lot of freedom to play the way he wants, ”explains Geoff Ellenor, game director, in an interview.

As everyone masters a different form of combat, the experience becomes dynamic and varied, which is the strength of Gotham Knights.

The fun cooperative

Gotham Knights It is primarily a single player game, but it also offers the option of online cooperative play. As part of the test, WB Games Montreal paired me with a member of the development team to test out a cooperative mission.

I couldn’t test co-op in the city, but I tested it in a dungeon and it works like a spell. The fights are like a choreography: everyone does his thing, we meet in the middle to create a final duo and voila!

I like to choose the harsh and dark path among the piles of enemies that come in front of me. Even though my playmate and I had several villains on us, the fighting remained very smooth and I didn’t notice any slowdowns.

With the pandemic of recent years, many players have returned to cooperative games and are demanding more. This is what could make Gotham Knights successful. As much as you can enjoy the game alone, you can call a friend and fight crime together.

A game to watch?

Gotham Knights is a game that could appeal to a wide range of players. WB Games Montreal promises an original story with authentic characters experiencing real emotions. Although they are heroes, it was important for the team to show the human vulnerability behind the mask. We can therefore expect a multi-layered dark story in which we risk getting lost for long hours, alone or with a friend.

Gotham Knights has the potential to be as successful as the series Batman: Arkham and it could appeal to a new type of gamer with its moving story and dynamism of the game game.

This is what we will see when it releases on October 21, 2022 on Xbox Series X / S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
