Energy sobriety: here’s the trick that will reduce electricity consumption by -20 to -30%

A household’s hot water production is often incorrectly regulated. Here’s how to take action to significantly reduce your bill.

What if that is the end of abundance? As the government unveils its energy sobriety plan this Thursday, the French will be invited to perform harmless gestures that will avoid excessive electricity consumption. And to convince, the state will emphasize these actions that will be good for your bills and good for the planet.

And among these, a piece of advice that few French people think about: the temperature of the hot water. A government communication campaign will invite the French next week to make this small gesture that will be anything but trivial as it will be able to lower the electricity bill from -20 to -30% in a few months.

You should know that the water comes out of your water heater at a temperature between 65 ° C and 70 ° C and can rise up to 80 ° C in case of incorrect adjustment. “A temperature that you will never use otherwise you risk burning your hands,” said Olivier Véran, a spokesman for the government on Wednesday.

Lowering the temperature to around 60 ° C will allow immediate savings. According to Ademe, in fact, the production of domestic hot water can represent up to 20% of domestic energy consumption, or 270 euros on average.

Furthermore, the production of this waste heat costs each household 83 euros per year.

Beware of the risks of legionellosis

But be careful not to lower the temperature below 55 ° C, which could favor the development of bacteria such as legionnaires’ disease.

Professionals are unanimous, the ideal temperature is 60 ° C! And if it’s good for your short-term bill, this advice is good for the medium and long-term as well. In fact, the warmer the water, the greater the amount of limestone that forms. And therefore the wear of the heap will be faster.

But as far as hot water is concerned, there is another even more interesting tip to save: invest in flow reducers (aerators and efficient showers). They allow a family to save 40 euros per year.

How to lower the temperature of its heap?

The gesture is not very complicated for any handyman but it may also require the intervention of a professional for greater safety.

The thermostat is located under the water heater and it is sometimes necessary to remove a cover.

Some models are equipped with a graduated wheel that directly indicates temperatures.
Others have a graduated dial from 1 to 5. At this point, refer to the water heater instructions to find out where to place the cursor. If in doubt, turn the knob to 3 or 4. Then, once the water heater has started, measure the temperature at the tap. Just put a thermometer under the water. If it is too cold you will have to raise the slider, if it is too hot you will have to lower it a little.

More inaccurately, some dials only indicate “+ and -“. Before any intervention, measure the temperature of the tap water. Depending on this, adapt the settings. Insert the screwdriver into the slot provided, then rotate it towards + or – as needed.

In case of absence, switch off the water heater

Note, one last step to save on your electricity bill. In case of absence of 3 or more days, do not hesitate to cut your pile. It will consume less energy when recharging than if it had to keep the water hot every day while you were away. The only flaw, you will not have hot water on your return …
