Cyberpunk 2077: to have a sequel that rocks, the license moves! The secrets of the developers

Game news Cyberpunk 2077: to have a sequel that rocks, the license moves! The secrets of the developers

CD Projekt knows where to go. A few days ago, the studio unveiled its roadmap for the many years to come, with 5 games of The Witcher (a trilogy and two spin-off episodes), a new license for the moment called Hadar, as well as derivative productions, new studies or even the departure of Marcin Iwinski.

The release of Cyberpunk 2077 went very badly for CD Projekt, which admitted its shortcomings on older generation versions and took more than a year and a half to correct its title while developing an extension, called Phantom Liberty. The latter will arrive next year, but will mark the end of the road for the game to take place in Night City.

Cyberpunk 2077 has come a long way and will go even further with Orion!

Back in the good graces of the players thanks for the work doneto many promotionsand quality advertising through cyberpunk board runnersproduction a 20 million copies sold begins his home stretch. But this is only the beginning of a new era for CD Projekt. The company is reorganized several months, he bought two studios in North America and opened a third, and Marcin Iwinski, co-founder and co-CEO of the company, announced his resignation.

Anyway, in addition to the games announced around The Witcher license and the new license in development, CD Projekt announced the Orion project, which is nothing more than the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077. The project is ambitious and CD Projekt announced it indicating that it was determined to prove that the license is powerful and so on its potential is enormous. If not planned for several years, the new game should mobilize a lot of peoplebut not necessarily where you think!

Hundreds of developers for Orion and a new continent

In an interview with VGC, Pawel Saskothe quest director clarified one important thing: it is CD Project North America (Boston and Vancouver) for which he will be responsible manage the development of Orion. For the occasion, the developer will pack up and move across the Atlantic Ocean:

I see you are asking me the question so I would like to clarify things. After the release of the Phantom Liberty DLC, my main focus will be on the new Cyberpunk 2077 project, codenamed Orion. I will be moving to Boston with the team responsible for Cyberpunk 2077 to create a new studio and be the base of the North American team. In collaboration with the Vancouver team and the Warsaw team, we will deliver a game that rocks.

Both studies will receive the support of the Warsaw office, and will mobilize several hundred people. This is also a huge change for CD Projekt in general, as all major projects have been developed until then Poland. When asked about the manpower required by IGN to produce the game, Piotr Nielubowicz, Chief Financial Officer of CD Project, said:

The North American studio will consist of teams from Boston and Vancouver, with support from developers in Poland. As for the question of the total headcount required for such a production, I think the best point of comparison is Cyberpunk 2077, our most recent version, when considering the headcount requirements for future development and projects of this magnitude. Without taking too many risks, I think we can say that we should need 350-550 developers.

If the sequel is of the same scale as Cyberpunk 2077, we can also imagine that the range we have been given is the low fork. In fact, some sources have indicated, upon the release of Cyberpunk 2077, that the teams were a bit limited to get ahead at a fast pace and handle the unexpected. It remains to be seen whether the license transfer will take an impact on Orion’s tone and mood, even if, we remind you, Night City is located in a fictitious way on American territory. In any case, CD Projekt does not want to reproduce the same errors, especially at the level of quality assurance !
